When people think about marketplaces, they usually picture the customer experience, browsing products, comparing prices, and checking out with just a few clicks. From the outside, it all looks simple. After spending more than eight years working with Australian and New Zealand marketplaces, I can honestly say that’s only a small part of the story.
What I’ve come to appreciate over the years is that a successful marketplace isn’t built by chance. Behind every great customer experience is a team making hundreds of decisions every day – choosing the right sellers, maintaining a quality catalogue, supporting sellers, and making sure products remain compliant.
I’ve also learned that these responsibilities aren’t isolated, they all influence one another. A poor onboarding experience can lead to compliance and support issues later. Choosing the wrong sellers can affect catalogue quality. Small operational decisions can eventually shape how customers perceive the marketplace.
What customers don’t see is the amount of work that goes into making a marketplace feel effortless. Behind every product listing is a team making sure sellers are onboarded correctly, catalogues stay organised, and products meet compliance standards. When these things are done well, nobody notices. But when they’re not, everyone does.
A Marketplace Is Only As Good As Its Catalogue
One thing I’ve seen time and time again is marketplaces wanting to grow their catalogue as quickly as possible. While growth is important, I’ve found that the strongest marketplaces focus on having the right products and the right sellers – not simply the most.
I’ve seen marketplaces with thousands of products that were difficult to shop simply because the catalogue wasn’t managed properly. Products appeared in the wrong categories, descriptions were inconsistent, images varied in quality, duplicate listings, or simply choice overload are confusing customers.
For me, catalogue curation starts long before a product goes live. It begins with vendor vetting. Is this seller a good fit for the marketplace? Do their products complement the existing range? Can they consistently fulfil orders, maintain stock, and keep up with customer demand? These questions might seem simple, but they can make a huge difference over time.
It’s equally important to protect customers from poor-quality or counterfeit products. Every product that goes live contributes to the marketplace’s reputation, so maintaining quality standards should never be an afterthought.
When a catalogue is carefully curated, everyone benefits. Customers find products they can trust, sellers are positioned alongside quality brands, and the marketplace builds a reputation for reliability rather than simply variety. From a business perspective, that often translates into strong customer confidence, better conversion rates, fewer complaints and refunds, improved seller performance, and healthier long-term growth.
Seller Onboarding Sets The Tone
By the time a seller reaches onboarding, the Sales Team has already done the hard work of bringing them into the marketplace. I’ve always seen onboarding as the opportunity to continue building that relationship and help set sellers up for success.
To me, good onboarding isn’t simply collecting information and activating seller accounts and products. It’s about guiding sellers through the platform, explaining marketplace guidelines, sharing best practices, and helping them understand the processes from day one. The goal is to give sellers the knowledge and confidence to manage their own catalogue efficiently while knowing support is there when they need it.
I’ve found that spending a little more time educating sellers upfront saves everyone time later. Sellers become more independent, support requests decrease, processes become more streamlined, and operational teams can focus on adding value instead of constantly resolving avoidable issues.
The benefits go beyond efficiency. Sellers who feel supported from the beginning are more likely to stay engaged, perform well, and grow their business on the platform. That creates seller retention, a better marketplace experience, and ultimately contributes to long-term revenue growth.
To me, successful onboarding is about more than getting sellers live quickly, it’s about giving them the tools, knowledge and confidence to thrive from day one while creating a foundation for long-term success.
Compliance Never Stops
Compliance is one of those areas that often goes unnoticed…until something goes wrong.
Earlier in my career, I probably thought of compliance as making sure products met the rules before they went live. Over time, I realised that’s only the beginning.
Compliance is something that constantly evolves. Regulations change, mandatory standards are updated, products are recalled, marketplace policies improve. What was compliant six months ago may need reviewing today. That’s why compliance isn’t a one-time task, it’s an ongoing commitment. It involves reviewing products, validating certifications where required, monitoring product recalls, and working with sellers to ensure their listings continue to meet marketplace requirements.
I’ve never viewed compliance as simply enforcing policies. For me, it’s about protecting everyone involved. It helps safeguard consumers, support responsible sellers, and protect the marketplace’s reputation.
From a business perspective, proactive compliance also makes good commercial sense. Identifying risks early reduces costly disputes, prevents unnecessary product removals, minimises legal and financial exposure, and allows marketplace teams to focus on growth instead of reacting to avoidable problems.
It’s The People Behind The Marketplace That Make The Difference
After working across marketplaces operations for more than eight years, one thing has become very clear to me: technology can enable a marketplace, but experienced people are what keep it running well.
Marketplace operations isn’t just about processing tasks. It’s about understanding how every decision affects sellers, customers, and the business as a whole. The right people bring structure to complex processes, build stronger relationships, protect the integrity of the business, and create better experiences for customers.
The best professionals don’t just solve today’s problems, they anticipate tomorrow’s.
Customers will probably never see the work happening behind the scenes and honestly, they shouldn’t have to. When a marketplace runs smoothly, it simply feels effortless. In my experience, that doesn’t happen because of luck. It happens because the right people are making the right decisions every single day.
