The rise of technology – video chat, cloud services and so on – has revolutionised the way we run businesses and the way we work. In particular, it has ushered in a revolution in remote working – now it’s entirely possible to work for years without setting foot in an office building!

As a business outsourcing partner based in Melbourne, I’m pretty sold on the benefits of working from home – both for your business and your remote workers (virtual staff included).

For the longest time, I’ve only been able to talk about these benefits in general terms. However, the recent publication of several studies from reputable institutions into remote working means I now have the numbers to back these claims up.

In fact, some of the stats surprised even me!

If you’re on the fence about making the leap to remote working, here are a couple of stats that might change your mind.

My personal experience: what’s in it for business owners?

Before I got my start in virtual staffing, I managed an ecommerce business on eBay.

While business was good, my workload was anything but – I was responsible for customer service.

Imagine getting over 50 messages every four hours, every day – morning, night, public holidays, none of that mattered. And that’s on top of all the other duties that come with running an online store.

That’s exactly what I was doing!

While we were very grateful for our success, the workload was almost unbearable. We had to do something before we worked ourselves into early graves.

And that’s where the idea of hiring virtual assistants came in! Based in the Philippines and working from home, our first virtual assistant was able to take over all customer service after a brief training window.

The effect was almost immediate – it was as if a huge weight had been taken off our shoulders. Instead of work dominating my life, I was now free to focus on other areas of our online store… I was even able to reclaim my evenings and weekends!

Why hadn’t we thought of that before?

Let’s see the stats: how hiring virtual assistants can help your business

Running a business is hard, and oftentimes, your spare time and work-life balance are the first casualty. When I explain how virtual staffing can help you, these are the first benefits I cite.

Another great benefit is the potential for huge savings.

Believe it or not however, remote working virtual staff can also be more productive than their in-person colleagues.

I’m not saying this because I specialise in remote working – science backs me up on this!

Many business owners worry about distractions from the TV, the pantry or chores. According to a 9-month study conducted by researchers from Stanford University however, these fears are baseless.

In fact, remote workers are up to 13.5% more efficient than their office-bound colleagues!

Some other findings include:

  • Remote workers were on average 9% more engaged with their work

  • Work-at-home employees recorded fewer sick days, absences and shorter breaks

  • Turnover was halved compared to office-based staff

  • Greater job satisfaction and happiness overall!

Looking at the positives: what’s in it for you, the worker!

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of people working from home has risen dramatically in the past 15 years, jumping from 20% of the entire labour force to 30% of the entire labour force.

Australia isn’t the only place where remote working is blowing up – this trend is catching on worldwide from the Philippines all the way to South Africa.

It’s no surprise that remote working is becoming such a big deal. People who work from home report that 77% of remote workers are more productive.

Choose better work-life balance – you might be surprised by how many do!

In the past, I’ve talked about how working remotely can help you get more time with your family – both for business owners and remote workers. I’ve also written about some of the upsides of choosing to work remotely.

Do you want to know what really caught me off-guard though? A whopping 36% would take a pay cut if it gave them the option to working from home!

I suppose it makes sense –  money can buy many things, but it can’t buy you a healthier work-life balance! Not to mention the convenience.

Is your business considering hiring “work-from-home” virtual assistants?

Let VirtualStaff365 give you a hand!

One of the most common concerns I see in my line of work as an outsourcing provider is the worry that staff who work from home won’t be as efficient, will get distracted or won’t work as hard. This can stop business owners from hiring virtual staff who can otherwise help turn their fortunes around.

Hopefully, these stats have helped shatter those preconceptions!
